Creating The Perfect Membership Sales Experience!

The last thing I intended to do in Athens was buy anything other than a post card. Although the cruise had been fantastic I had started with a wallet full of money and yet had already had to hit American Express twice for a cash advance. What I had in mind now was a pleasant tour around the city in a cab and back to the hotel to rest!

So we did the Acropolis, Olympic Stadium and Temple of Jupiter. Despite lingering at our first stop over an hour it seemed that we were running out of things to do fast! The driver had an idea he said “Why don’t we go down town and look at some of the stores, Athens has great shopping?” Like a lamb to the slaughter I agreed.

The taxi makes a beeline to the center of the city and pulls up next to an expensive looking store with Greek vases, gold jewelry and assorted Gods in bronze. He assures me that the owner is his best friend and to prove it promptly walks into the back room and returns with two cans of Mythos (Greek beer.) It’s only 11 am but what the hec I’m on vacation. So I take one, as does my wife, then an attractive young women appears from nowhere with two glasses. The kids are each given a soda and moved to a quiet sitting area to play with their game boys.

We give a casual glance to the bronzes statues and vases. An attractive middle age women comes over and introduces herself, she’s from the Mid Western United States. After a pleasant conversation she leaves us to browse and a handsome man appears lingering in her place. Out of courtesy we ask the price of a couple of items. The beer is just about gone so we can leave when suddenly as if by magic another two appear. We start to move towards the front of the shop, when Alexander introduces himself. He is the owner and would just like to show us one piece of jewelry before we go. My wife sits and he brings out a gold chain in a Grecean style. It looks nice around my wife’s neck but I have absolutely no intention of buying it.

Alexander is in his early fifties, handsome, charming and speaks perfect English. He asks where we are from, we both say England. (We discovered early in the cruise that being English saves you at least 30%. Every merchant knows that English people are poor it’s the Americans who have all the money. In Italy a vendor instantly cuts 50% off the price of a painting when we asked him to translate the $500 price into pounds. We paid in dollars anyway! Works the same when asking cab fares too!)

Instantly on learning we are English, Alexander skillfully and subtle changes his sales approach. Then he uses this information to his advantage by praising the taste of European people and quickly bringing out a beautiful gold necklace. Which he says was hand made that very week. Sensing that my wife is falling under his spell I quickly point at a pair of gold earrings featuring the face of Alexander the Great. As the conversation continues he asks me what I do. I tell him I teach people how to sell. He laughs, and adjusts course again, now we are really bonding. He places the earrings on my wife as he talks. He has six stores and his girls are at private school in England. No mention of price is made in fact it’s very carefully avoided. He invites my wife to look in a mirror. I glance around looking for the kids; the cab driver and the young brunette have them busy in the corner. He asks what I think about the pieces, I say they look great but I don’t know the first thing about jewelry. He offers up an instant education.

Finally I ask the question, he takes the code number and calculates the price on a calculator, Inexpensive he says, $2900 for the necklace $500 for the earrings. Not exactly my idea of inexpensive. Nobody says anything. My daughter appears, she’s bored, a perfect escape!

To make it even better my wife bites, but wait…. by now I’m hooked with the whole experience. The store looks great; the beer is cold and the people professional. All are skilled in building rapport and Alexander himself is a master salesman. I actually appreciate it. Thinking quickly Alexander gives my daughter an inexpensive trinket in a nice case and tells her to give the second to her brother still tucked away in the corner. Having painlessly dispatched a potential sales robber Alexander turns his attention back to us but says nothing.

I spring for the earrings, then ask him how much the taxi drivers get for brining in their rides. He swears he pays them nothing but gives them the occasional good deal. That I don’t buy but I don’t care!

I know I’ve been set up and sold but it was all done so professionally that I actually enjoyed it!

Products are products but the experience sells!

Brilliant!

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Andrew,

Brilliant!
Although intended as a marketing guide for the golf industry, The Golf Marketing Bible is a must read for all marketing executives regardless of their target market. There are many useful techniques and strategies that may be tweaked to become applicable to most advertising campaigns.

Case in point, I am currently between job opportunities and have sent a deluge of cover letters out with my resume. The results have been next to nil. After reading The Golf Marketing Bible, I decided to implement some of the strategies into my next cover letter. “A bit unorthodox, but what the heck…it couldn’t hurt. Right?” Unbelievable. First letter out landed me an interview with a management consulting firm in Chicago. The second letter landed me an interview for a position in Florida.

All in less than a week! Brilliant!

Next up on my pile of must read materials is Cunningly Clever Marketing.

Thank you.

Ken

Businesses Unclear on the Concept

Do you really know what business you’re in? Sounds simple, but very often I find that a business owner thinks he/she is in one business, but the customers thinks it is another business. For example, in the karate business, where 80% of the students are under 12, most instructors mistakenly believe that they are in the business of teaching karate or self-defense.

Ask any of the parents of these children why they signed their child up for lessons and one, perhaps two at the most, will say for karate or self defense. The real reason parents sign their children up for karate is to help them gain self discipline, focus and concentration, to improve their grades in school, and develop the traits of confidence and positive self esteem. Having done extensive research into this particular market, I can tell you unequivocally that karate is rarely even mentioned in the top ten reasons.

Despite this fact, the great majority of instructors still fail to maximize their marketing efforts. They continue to advertise karate, the business they think they are in, while the customer continues to buy self-improvement for their children. Those schools that realize this, and change the focus of their marketing to self improvement through karate, may teach the same physical curriculum as those who believe they are in the karate business, but they can expect to enjoy three to four times the response from their marketing efforts.

As Charles Revlon once said, “In the factory we make perfume, in the stores we sell hope!”

Remember, people buy for their reasons, not yours! You might brew the best coffee in town, but if everyone is coming to you for your donuts it would be better to focus your marketing message on donuts. It doesn’t matter if you own a coffee plantation and grow the beans yourself, if your customers are coming for the donuts it will pay you to go with the flow.

Forget what you are trying to sell and focus instead on what your customers are buying!
